The 2025 NCOPE Residency Standards require program structure, learning objectives and assessment; they do not prescribe the SMART acronym or a SMART template.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Program design:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ncope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/NCOPE-3373-Residency-Standards-and-GuidelinesFNL3-1.pdf#page=27\">Standards 3.2a\u20133.2b<\/a> connect the sequence and duration of learning experiences with objectives that support progressive resident engagement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rotation objectives:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ncope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/NCOPE-3373-Residency-Standards-and-GuidelinesFNL3-1.pdf#page=35\">Standard 3.4a.4<\/a> requires objectives assigned to the learning experience. Its accompanying guidance calls for at least one objective for each rotation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Progress and feedback:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ncope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/NCOPE-3373-Residency-Standards-and-GuidelinesFNL3-1.pdf#page=37\">Standards 3.6\u20133.7<\/a> connect monitoring and evaluation with adjustments to the resident\u2019s learning activities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Individual development:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ncope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/NCOPE-3373-Residency-Standards-and-GuidelinesFNL3-1.pdf#page=73\">Appendix B, competencies 7.3\u20137.4<\/a> address self-directed learning goals and using feedback to support professional development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use the competencies in <a href=\"https:\/\/ncope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/NCOPE-3373-Residency-Standards-and-GuidelinesFNL3-1.pdf#page=60\">Appendix B<\/a> to identify the performance the resident needs to develop. Its domains cover Professionalism\/Ethics, Communication and Interpersonal Skills, Knowledge, Decision Making, Patient Care, Interprofessional Collaboration and Systems-Based Practice, and Professional Development and Well-Being.<\/p>\n<div class=\"smart-note\">\n<p>A clinical setting, patient population or device category provides the context for a learning experience. The objective describes what the resident will demonstrate within that context. Plan access to required experiences and MAVs using <a href=\"https:\/\/ncope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/NCOPE-3373-Residency-Standards-and-GuidelinesFNL3-1.pdf#page=53\">Appendix A<\/a>, and assess competence using the applicable competency descriptions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;What SMART Means&#8221; module_id=&#8221;smart-meaning&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>What Makes a Goal SMART?<\/h2>\n<dl>\n<dt>Specific<\/dt>\n<dd>State an observable action, such as assessing findings, explaining a care plan or communicating a recommendation.<\/dd>\n<dt>Measurable<\/dt>\n<dd>Define the evidence and criteria the mentor will use to assess progress. An activity count can help plan practice, but the quality of the resident\u2019s performance must also be assessed.<\/dd>\n<dt>Attainable<\/dt>\n<dd>Match the objective to the resident\u2019s starting point, available learning opportunities and required level of supervision.<\/dd>\n<dt>Relevant<\/dt>\n<dd>Connect the objective to an Appendix B competency and the purpose of the rotation or the resident\u2019s identified learning need.<\/dd>\n<dt>Timely<\/dt>\n<dd>Set a realistic completion date and a point when the resident and mentor will review progress.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Write a Learning Objective&#8221; module_id=&#8221;smart-write&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Write a Learning Objective<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"smart-steps\">\n<li>\n<h3>Select the Competency<\/h3>\n<p>Choose the applicable Appendix B competency and read its descriptions. Identify the knowledge, judgment, skills or behaviors the resident needs to develop.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Describe the Action<\/h3>\n<p>Write what the resident will demonstrate. Use an observable action instead of a broad phrase such as \u201cunderstand patient care.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Choose the Learning Experience<\/h3>\n<p>Identify the rotation, practice setting and learning activities that provide appropriate opportunities to work toward the objective.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Define the Evidence<\/h3>\n<p>Agree how the mentor will assess progress: direct observation, discussion of clinical reasoning, a case presentation or another suitable work product. Use the applicable competency descriptors.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Set the Review Date<\/h3>\n<p>Choose a feasible timeframe based on the resident\u2019s readiness and available resources. Identify an earlier check-in if it will help address barriers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Use Feedback to Adjust<\/h3>\n<p>Review the evidence together. Revise learning activities, support or the objective as needed, while maintaining the program\u2019s required outcomes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"smart-note\">\n<h3>A Starting Template<\/h3>\n<p>By <strong>[review date]<\/strong>, during <strong>[learning experience]<\/strong>, the resident will <strong>[observable action]<\/strong> in <strong>[defined situations]<\/strong>. The timeframes and activity counts illustrate the writing method; they are not additional NCOPE minimum requirements. Clinical activities remain subject to the resident\u2019s readiness and the applicable supervision requirements. Completing a stated number of activities does not, by itself, establish competence.<\/p>\n<div class=\"smart-examples\">\n<article class=\"smart-example\">\n<h3>Clinical Reasoning and Care Planning<\/h3>\n<p class=\"smart-context\"><strong>Domains:<\/strong> Decision Making and Patient Care<br \/><strong>Context:<\/strong> A pediatric orthotic rotation<\/p>\n<p>By the end of a six-week rotation, the resident will present and justify evaluation findings and proposed care plans for three appropriate patients, connecting clinical findings, patient priorities and the proposed intervention. The mentor will observe the relevant care activities and assess the resident\u2019s reasoning using the selected competency descriptors.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<article class=\"smart-example\">\n<h3>Communication With the Care Team<\/h3>\n<p class=\"smart-context\"><strong>Domains:<\/strong> Communication and Interpersonal Skills; Interprofessional Collaboration and Systems-Based Practice<br \/><strong>Context:<\/strong> A rotation involving collaborative patient care<\/p>\n<p>During the next four weeks, the resident will deliver three case handovers that communicate the patient\u2019s goals, key findings, recommendations and follow-up responsibilities. The mentor will observe the handovers and give feedback on clarity, accuracy and coordination using the relevant competency descriptors.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<article class=\"smart-example\">\n<h3>Professional Judgment<\/h3>\n<p class=\"smart-context\"><strong>Domain:<\/strong> Professionalism\/Ethics<br \/><strong>Context:<\/strong> A quarterly learning plan<\/p>\n<p>Before the next quarterly review, the resident will discuss two appropriate clinical situations with the mentor, identify relevant consent or confidentiality considerations and explain how professional standards informed the response. The mentor will assess the reasoning and provide feedback against the selected professionalism competency.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<article class=\"smart-example\">\n<h3>Learning From Feedback<\/h3>\n<p class=\"smart-context\"><strong>Domain:<\/strong> Professional Development and Well-Being<br \/><strong>Context:<\/strong> An individual development objective<\/p>\n<p>Within four weeks of a progress review, the resident will identify one learning need from feedback, complete an agreed learning activity and present how it applies to a case or practice situation. Use planned check-ins and the required quarterly evaluation discussions to review performance, feedback and access to learning opportunities.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Directors and mentors:<\/strong> Check that the program\u2019s learning experiences collectively support the required competencies and experiences.
