What Objective Criteria Might We Want to Consider When Selecting a Resident?

Resident Selection Criteria (Standard 1.1b – 2025 NCOPE Standards)

Residency programs must select residents based upon predetermined, objective criteria. Program directors may consider the following areas:

– Academic Performance
– Clinical and/or Technical Experience
– Letters of Reference
– Communication
– Professionalism and Maturity
– Research Experience

A numeric rating scale can help standardize evaluations:

Rating Scale:
5 – Exceptional: Outstanding, well above expectations
4 – Strong: Above average
3 – Satisfactory: Meets expectations
2 – Fair: Below average or minor concerns
1 – Weak: Significant concerns or limited evidence
